Important Revolutionary War Figures

 Introduction
Do you know what the importance of John Paul Jones quote “I have
not yet begun to fight”?  Do you know what Monticello means? Do you
know that John Hancock considered himself a King?  Well you will find
out in this piece of writing which tells about three important Revolutionary
war heroes. Thomas Jefferson,John Paul Jones, and John Hancock.

Chapter one
The Fabulous Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743  April 2nd on his family's plantation
Shadwell in central Virginia. His Father was a prosperous farmer who
owned dozens of slaves he was also a surveyor little is known about his
mother. He was taught by Reverend William Douglas for five years.Tom
also loved music he practiced his violin three hours a day his nickname
was “Tall Tom”. In 1767 Jefferson began Designing Monticello (little
mountain) his dream house. The design resembled buildings created by
a 16th century Italian Architect Andrea Palladio. Construction began in
1770 and continued until 1809. Jefferson moved into Monticello's south
Pavilion after his birthplace Shadwell burned to the ground in 1770. He
also wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Some of the things he wrote were anti slavery even though he owned
slaves. (An interesting fact about Thomas Jefferson is that he got into a
relationship with a slave. Her name was Sally Hemmings and in many
she was Jefferson's late wife's half sister .Jefferson got in a relationship
with Sally didn't have a choice since Jefferson was her master though
eventually they did grow fond of each other they had six children together
two died in infancy the other four Madison Eston Harriet and Beverly
would live to adulthood They would be house slaves in Monticello until
adulthood. Even though Jefferson gave his slave children good jobs just
imagine what it would be like to have your children be in the chains of
slavery and to be engaged to someone you yourself might have whipped
yourself to Jefferson he thought it was fine.)  and it also announced
Independence from Great Britain. Even though many people looked over
and changed (one of the changes was to erase the part about anti slavery)
the Declaration Jefferson remained the main author and he defended that
title fiercely.

      Chapter two
  The Amazing John Paul Jones
John Paul Jones was a amazing captain in continental navy. But before
the war he was born Scotland in 1747 he became a apprentice to a ship
owner at age 12 and then made his first voyage across the Atlantic
Ocean to Virginia. He later worked on a slave trading ship then became
the captain of a merchant ship. But when the Revolutionary war started
he found himself in poverty. Jones then traveled to Philadelphia to help
out fit the Alfred. The very first of the ships Congress bought. He made
friends with two Congressmen that used their influence to have Jones
become the  senior first lieutenant on board the Alfred  which is the
second in command on a ship in the continental navy. In 1776 he was
promoted to a captain of the sloop Ranger. The Ranger had only 18 small
cannons and a crew around 140 men. Yet on April 10 1778 Jones led a
raid against Whitehaven the English port where he had first sailed as a
12 year old apprentice. He landed with thirty men and captured two forts
and burnt three ships. That was the only time in the war that fighting took
place on English land. After this he unsuccessfully tried to capture a
British Duke in exchange for the good treatment of American prisoners.
His most famous battle was against John Peachman. One day Jones was
sailing near England when the man in the crows nest saw a British sail.
About an hour later the two ships engaged into a horrible battle some
time in some of Jones 16 pounders (the big cannons) exploded and the
remaining ones crews refused to operate their sixteen pounders afraid
that theirs would explode to. Soon after this Peachmans ship clashed together
with Jones and fired all their cannons which is called a broadside Jones ship
was slowly sinking. It was at this time that Peachman asked Jones to surrender
he responded with the words “I have not yet begun to fight” unfortunately for
Jones not all men on his ship agreed with him two men started freeing British
prisoners as a sign of surrender Jones Quickly stopped them and told the
prisoners that they would all die unless they manned the cannons. Despite
Jones extra crew he was still losing the battle. Just then a ship under Jones
command appeared he was sure that he had won the battle now. But instead
of firing at Peachmans ship they fired into the hull of Jones ship! (Jones learned
after the battle that the captain of the ship was so crazy he was considered mad)
Jones came up with a desperate plan to board Peach mans ship while his own
ship was still firing. It was risky and dangerous but it was the only plan left he
led the charge onto Peachmans ship just as his “reinforcements” stopped firing
after around 20 minutes Peachman surrendered by sacrificing ship for the well
being of his crew. (this he got credit for)Jones lost around 60 men Peachman
lost 73.When Jones got back he was greatly celebrated and he was going to be
promoted to Admiral but other jealous captains stopped it.Unfortunately he
never sailed for America again.

       Chapter Three
John Hancock the king of Boston

On January 13 1737 a baby boy was born in Braintree Massachusetts. He was
given His Grandfathers and Fathers name John Hancock. John's Father and
Grandfather were both ministers they expected John to follow in their footsteps
he would go to Harvard college and become a minister. Braintree was a farming
town.Most boys had to milk the cows,feed the hogs,chop wood,haul water,and
work in the garden. John's father didn't own a farm so he didn't have to do any
of these chores. John tagged along with John Adam and the Quincy brothers
Edmund and Samuel the other boys did not like John they thought that he
complained to much. John wanted the other boys to like him. In 1742 when
John was five he started going to Mrs. Belchers country school. John Adams
and the Quincy brothers where in his class. At that school John learned reading
writing and arithmetic. Later John was expected to go to the local grammar
school than Harvard. But John's Father died in 1744 when John was seven.
Suddenly the Hancock family was poor. John his mother his older sister Mary
and younger brother Ebenezer had no place to live. Johns Grandfather let them
move into his big house in Lexington Massachusetts Reverend Hancock was
eager to start training John to become a minister. Johns Uncle Thomas had
however had other ideas. He came From Boston to Lexington to talk to John's
mother (Thomas Hancock  born on July 17, 1703 – August 1, 1764 was a
merchant in colonial Boston. Born to Reverend John Hancock and Elizabeth
(Clark), he started his business  in the book trade, and expanded into importing
and exporting throughout the British Empire. He was also a smuggler, evading
the British Navigation Acts by trading with Holland, which was forbidden.
Thanks to profitable contracts with the British government during King George
war and the Seven year war, Hancock became one of  not just Boston's but
America's wealthiest men. When his health failed, he passed his business and
fortune to his nephew, future Founding Father John Hancock, whom he had
raised since John was thirteen.)Thomas and his wife Lydia had no children.
He wanted to adopt John and teach him the family business. John's mother
agreed and told John to pack his belongings. In his new school John and his
classmates practiced how to write in different ways. John loved to write his
name in different ways(later when John was the first to sign the Declaration of
Independence he wrote his name in large loopy writing so that King George
who had problems could see it.)One of the things that John longed for was for
new friends but the other boys were jealous of his wealth so he made none.
When John was not studying his uncle brought him to the docks. He loved to
watch the boats come in.But to him the most exciting part of it was knowing
that some of those ships where his Uncles ships and that one day those ships
would be his.Knowing this he thought that his Uncle was Boston's King so he
must be the Prince. In 1750 13 year old John went to Harvard college. He was
the second youngest in a class of 20 students. John studied math, geometry,
the Bible, Latin, Greek, and writing. At Harvard John finally made friends
Samuel Quincy was also there. After graduating from Harvard in 1754. John
came back home to work with his Uncle. He carefully copied letters in his fancy
handwriting and learned about the buying and selling of goods (and smuggling).
In August 1764 Thomas Hancock died.He left his big house ships, shops, and
property to 27 year old John. Suddenly Boston prince was Boston's king. The
next thing John did was to help repeal the stamp act first he did it to protect his
property soon after he started believing in the Patriot cause. The stamp act was
repealed and John became very popular. Later a fire on a cold night burnt down
more than 20 houses. John then rode down from his house and gave out food,
money, and food. Shortly after the Townshend Acts were put into action two
custom agents tried to board Johns ship the Lydia  but John stepped in front of
them to stop them from boarding his ships. This brave act made him a hero to
the people of Boston. John Hancock often in his life did brave acts like these
often risking his life in the process. He also spent his life searching for friends
and when he died in 1793 October eighth he had more friends he could have
ever counted.
