                                                                Paul Revere

Introduction

Did you know that the story of Paul Revere is fake and his famous quote the “British are coming” was fabricated. Also you may think the “mighty” Paul Revere was a part of the reason why the patriots won the American revolution against the biggest, baddest and most powerful army on earth (In the 1800). In a way he was, but not in the way you think. Did he save the war and was he the reason the patriots won? No. But did he contribute to the cause of the American revolution? Yes.

                                                                       

The early life of Paul Revere

Paul Revere was born in December 1734. He was the third oldest out of 12 children. Before the war, Paul Revere had many jobs. He engraved portraits, he became a dentist and made dentures and much more. He was always looking for more things to explore and more things to do. He was constantly looking at all of the attractions at the harbor. Once, there was even a old, pickled pirate head. Paul Revere was a member of Christ Church in Boston that means he is a Christian.

The confusion

The confusion with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem is really interesting because Paul Revere was the leader of the Sons of Liberty. The name, Sons of Liberty,  made him sound so amazing and important but this just means he started a rebellion. Also, the poem states that  Paul Revere was the only one on the midnight ride, but that statement is so wrong because he wasn't even the first person to go on the midnight ride. But when William Dawes was too slow to warn almost everywhere, Paul Revere  set off to warn everybody about the British. But these two were not alone.   There were so many people on the midnight ride scattered around telling different people “the British are coming,” but none of the Sons of Liberty yelled the British are coming.  They actually whispered to certain people “The regulars are coming out.” They did this because the British army was called the regulars.  If they yelled,“The British are coming” that would be very confusing because the colonists were the British.  Paul Revere and William Dawes actually got caught by British troops and were held hostage for less than 10 minutes because the troops heard gun fire and ran to help so Paul Revere and William Dawes were let go.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

                   I am going to talk about the amazing Benjamin Franklin.

     Ben was extremely smart and had many jobs. He was a statesman, a scientist, an inventor, an author,a printer,and took part in the French and Indian War. Ben was born on January 17,1706. He was born on 17 Milk Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Ben's family was very large. He was number fifteen in a family with seventeen children. Four of the children died young. Seven were half siblings from his Father’s previous marriage. His parents, Josiah and Abiah Franklin were not rich. Josiah ran a shop called the Blue Ball. He made candles and soap which were sold at the shop.  Next to the shop was the family home. It had two rooms upstairs and two downstairs.Young Ben shared a room with a few of his brothers. Josiah and Abiah wanted Ben to become a minister, but Ben had two strikes against him. First, he had been born on a Sunday. Many people believed that a Sunday baby was a child of the devil. Also, he was left-handed. People thought  to be another mark of the devil. His father punished Ben when he caught him throwing a ball or writing with his left hand. Also he was a smart aleck and that got him in trouble quite often. Ben went to school for only two years. He started at eight and ended at ten. He went to South Grammar School. The next year he went to George Brownell’s English School. Ben loved to read and writing poetry. He also loved the outdoors. Swimming and kite-flying were his favorite sports. Ben decided to become a sailor when he grew up. His parents decided that Ben must become an apprentice. This was common for boys in colonial days.  He was a printer for his brother James and eventually was a successful editor  from 1718-1723. When he was seventeen he went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A runaway apprentice could be punished if they were caught. Ben became wealthy when he wrote The Poor Man’s Almanac.  

      Soon Ben found love.  He wanted to marry Deborah Read. Instead he had a child with another woman. The kids name was William Franklin. He was born in 1730 or 1731. Ben wanted to raise the boy. Ben raised the boy without the child’s mother.  Meanwhile Debby had married another man while Ben was in England. The man left Debby.  Soon Ben and Debby reconnected. On September 1, 1730, they had a common-law wedding. This meant that they would live as husband and wife without a legal ceremony. Debby would also treat William as her son. Later they had two children .Francis Folger Franklin was born on October 1732. He died of smallpox at the age of four. Sarah Franklin was born in 1743. Debby called Ben ”Pappy”.  In December 19, 1774 Debby died of a stroke at age 66.  Ben was heart broken especially since his son William thought that Ben killed her.

      By 1749, Ben retired from business and started concentrating on science, experiments, and inventions.  Ben invented so many different things and was ahead of his time.  Some of his inventions were electricity, bifocals, Franklin Stove to just name a few.   In 1776, Ben signed The Declaration of Independence because he wanted America to be freed from England.  Ben was often called the "First American."  He signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787. In 1785, Ben was elected governor of Pennsylvania. In 1788 he wasn’t governor anymore. He died on April 17, 1790 at the age 84. 20,000 people attended the funeral of the man who was called “the harmonious human multitude.”

     Ben Franklin lead a long life.  His legacy lives on in his inventions and his fight for a free country.  After death he could be seen on the $100 dollar bill showing the impact he had on this country.  Ben Franklin had many famous quotes, he lived his life to the fullest.  My favorite quote by him was “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today”.

D.AR.E. Essay

  

          In D.A.R.E or Drug.Abuse.Resistance.Education we learned about 

Peer Pressure, Stress and Risk, and Two types of drugs. I will cover them.

          First is Peer Pressure. Pure Pressure is when you are pressured to do something like if tell if your friend steals. But if you tell you would lose your friend. So you would need to choose between friends or getting in trouble for knowing, and only you can put pure pressure on yourself.

          Next is Stress and Risk . When you are stress you usually feel frustration, tense, hot, and or sweaty. You also start acting differently like you would lose your temper, yell, become suddenly quiet. Usually people scream into a pillow or punch a pillow to relieve stress but relax and do something you enjoy. Risk is taking a chance. Risk sometimes causes stress. Risk has consequences it can be good or bad. A good risk is like studying so you get a good or the best grade and maybe a reward. A bad risk is not studying and you could get your worst grade and most likely summer school.

          Finally, two types of Drugs. Alcohol and tobacco. I think these are the most dangerous because they are the most commonly used drugs. Alcohol is like sugar. It makes your heart beat faster like running but running makes your heart stronger, while alcohol makes your heart weaker. Over 75,000 alcohol related death a year. Tobacco as well as over 200 chemicals in a cigarette, so five would be over 1000 chemicals. Over 400,000 people die from tobacco related deaths every year. Over 475,000 are tobacco and alcohol related deaths together.       

          I pledge to never smoke, drink, or use drugs of any type.

Early life - In the year 1743, Thomas Jefferson was born, April 13 ( April 2, 1743 Old Style, Julian calendar).  His family was very wealthy and he had 6 sisters, and a brother. Thomas’ mom loved to write, and she would share that love with Thomas. Some scientists believe that Tom’s relationship with his mom was strained. When Thomas was 3 years old, his family moved from Shadwell to a farm called Tuckahoe. By the time Thomas was 

5 years old, he went to a 1 room school. He got educated very well. When Tom was in college, he studied 15 hours a day. He graduated with top honors at the age of 20. Tom was a strong minded, freckle- faced guy at that time, others would say.

Successful + Famous for - Thomas Jefferson was president 1801 to 1809. Tom was the 3rd president of the U.S.!  As a president, he said that he wanted to make everyone feel equal. So, Tom wrote most of the Declaration of Independence.

Marriage - Thomas Jefferson was married January 1, 1772. Thomas was married to a woman named Martha Wayles Skelton. After Thomas married Martha, they moved to a place called Monticello, which meant “little rock” in Italian. They lived in a big house, where hundreds of people still visit today.

Happy Death - By the time Jefferson was 83, he died on July 4, 1826 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Just before he died he was very thankful for having a happy, healthy, good life.

D.A.R.E.

In fifth grade we have the privilege of having D.A.R.E. classes. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Even though the name of this class is about drugs, that is not all we learned about. During our D.A.R.E. classes we learned about many important things such as, how cigarettes affect our body, communication, bullying, and telling vs. tattling.

The first thing we learned about was how cigarettes affect our body. We learned that cigarettes can cause black lung, a serious lung problem that can cause lung cancer. Smoking also reduces the amount of blood that flows to the brain. It can also cause heart disease, which is really harmful because the heart pumps blood all around the body. Another effect of smoking is you have more colds and upper respiratory problems. The secondhand smoke from the cigarettes is also harmful. Did you know that there are almost 50,000 secondhand smoke related deaths each year.There are 200 known harmful chemicals in cigarettes. One of the most known is nicotine. Nicotine is a chemical that makes the cigarettes so addictive. So if you only try 1 cigarette you will get hooked. That is why people who use to smoke, take up hobbies to prevent smoking.  

Another thing we learned about was communication. We learned that communication is very important. There are many communication styles. A common way to communicate is verbal. That is when you are saying or talking about something, and the way you are saying them. There are different ways verbal communication can be used. You could be demanding, unsure, or confident. If you are demanding it means that you are being aggressive. Your tone is tough and stern. When you are unsure, it means you are being timid. You could be avoiding eye contact, or slouching, and talking very quietly. Finally, the last style of verbal communication is “Confident Communication”. This is when you are being assertive. You are making eye contact, your back is straight, and you are talking in a just right tone. Another way to communicate is using nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is the opposite of verbal communication. It is when you use your body language and hand language.

Finally, the last thing we learned about was bullying. Bullying is when someone makes fun of you or hurts you repeatedly. We learned that bullying is not really that common and most people think that teasing is bullying but it’s not. We were also taught that usually if someone bullies you it is because of their life at home, problems with their family, or even with their schoolwork. Bullying can happen anywhere. It can happen at recess, lunch, or even during class. The last thing we were taught was that if you are being bullied you should tell an adult. After that, if they keep bullying you tell again. If they don’t stop after that you should stand up for yourself assertively. Bullying is serious so if it happens to you, make sure you tell someone about what is happening.

In addition to bullying we learned about tattling and telling. Tattling is when you tell on every little thing somebody does that isn’t a big deal, like if you told on somebody for not drinking all of  their water and then threw it out. On the other hand, telling is when you only tell on somebody when it is necessary. An example of telling is when a student makes a face at the teacher when her back is turned. Telling on someone is okay, but when you start telling on everyone for every little thing, you start to tattle.

In conclusion, D.A.R.E. has taught me so many important lessons that will help me make better decisions in the future. I pledge to never smoke a cigarette, because the nicotine will make me addicted to it and it will have many negative effects on my health and the others who inhales the secondhand smoke from the cigarette.

One evening…before I got my fish, we went shopping to an Indian grocery store in Norwalk, which is called Patel Brother’s and we had to buy a lot of food and it was all from India shipped over to America. After we finished our grocery shopping, we had to meet up with my mom outside the store. We got in the car, and it felt like we were sitting in the car for hours, but it was not an hour long, because it only took a couple of minutes before we got to the place we were going to.

My mom and grandma are getting their kitchens remodeled, so we had to go to the cabinet place to pick out the ones we wanted. When we got there, I saw a lot of cabinets and the guy who made them was very nice. Then my grandma pointed to us, and  said “did you meet these little monsters before” and he said “yes.”  The time that we were there, I was looking at the big place and when we left we had to go to a appliance store and that place was very big also.

When we first got there, my mom said if I behave, I will get a fish from the pet store next door. Me and my sister behaved really well even though it was hard for me to control my excitement to get my fish. They finally finished looking around and we went to the pet store next door.

When I entered the store to get my fish, I was trying to be on my best behavior and there were thousands of fishes to choose from. I was so excited I was about to scream. Then I got my eyes on a good fish-- all of them are good of course, so I kept asking my mom if I could get a baby fish, and she said, “No, it’s better to pick out a bigger fish.”

So, my mom told that we should first pick out a tank. She had a question, so she told me to get a staff member. So, I ran over to the guy and said that my mom needed help, and he followed me to where my mom was. They talked and after that she was still looking at the tanks then she got help again and they talked and after that she found a tank. Then I went back to the baby fish and I asked her again and she said no, then she saw a perfect fish. She said, how about this betta fish and me and my sister, Shriya said yes!

 So we went to the cashier and we bought the fish. When we were in the car, I was thinking of the name Luke and my sister was thinking about Paradise and I said that was her toy horses name. She said she changed her toy horses name and now it was called Mia. I said, how about Luke, because Luke Skywalker had a blue lightsaber and she said ok. I couldn’t wait to tell Luke his name, so I told him right away.

When we got home, we put together his tank and gave him his food, but we weren’t hungry. Having Luke has been important to me, because he gives me something to look forward to when I get home from school. He’s also been my responsibility to feed him ever since I got him. I have always been the type of kid to do a chore for one day and never do it again, but with Luke, I haven’t forgotten to feed him and I always check to make sure he’s alive, because he loves playing dead. I have gotten used to it and know exactly how to make sure he’s still breathing.

Fireside Friendship

My heart was pounding like a hammer. My feet were pedaling fast and my mind was going even faster, as I produced more and more questions in my mind. Finally, I had made it back, turning the corner with a sigh of relief. Panting, I stepped off my bike, walking over to where soon the campfire would be lit. I could see the grill nobs turn as they started to produce heat for the food my friends, and I would soon eat, with each other when they got back.

 I couldn't wait, for them to return from the bay where they were getting washed off in the cool water. Every minute that passed felt like an hour but it really was only ten minutes. The smell of dinner started to slowly arise off the grill and spread into the air around me. And then I heard something from far away, the sounds of my friends I could just make out all of them Lucy.W., Ella, Charlotte, Ava, Mary, Helena, and Lucy Z. They got louder and louder until they peddled right into the campsite.  With glee, I jumped out of my camp chair and skipped over the roots and bramble to see them. “How was the water?”, I asked.

It had only been an hour since I had seen them last, but so many things happened in that hour it could’ve been a month. I could tell by their facial expression they had something they wanted to say to me, and if I had to guess, my facial expression was probably the same.  I eagerly shared with them what happened.  “Earlier on, I was at our fort all alone.  I heard a mysterious  voice through my walkie-talkie.  This was a voice that I did not know, and on our secret channel.  It made my hands start to shiver and my heart start to beat harder and harder. I jumped on my bike, and headed back to the campsite. I pedaled like I never had before. Bike gliding, and turning where there needed to be turns. My level of fear was high, and all I wanted was you guys my friends to be there with me.”  I was shocked to hear they wanted to tell me that they heard the mysterious voice as well.  They were worried about me being alone.  It made me feel so good to feel that I was not alone and they were worried about me too!!

 The smell of dinner was even stronger now, and our stomachs were as loud as an angry mob about to attack their prey.  I realized that as soon as my BFFs were back at the campground that my breath returned to its normal pattern and so did my heart.  Waiting for dinner, our minds reeled with questions to ask each other and games to play.   I drifted away into my memory of the past day as it came in play. We were all gliding with the wind in our faces . Our hair made a color pallet floating in the air.  Then, next thing I knew my bike was tilted, getting closer and closer to the gravel until it hit. Wet tears filled my eyes like they were meant to be for a whale. “Ow” I said as my face turned splotchy red. I went to cover my cut that was oozing blood as Ella ran for help.  Lucy grabbed the first aid kit and began to apply a Band-Aid,Helena offered help with my cut. Ava went with Ella to go get my dad, and Mary and Charlotte and Lucy Z. pulled me to my feet. Limping they helped me back to the campsite while Lucy grabbed my bike.

“Earth to Olive”, Ava said, bringing me back to real time.

 “We are a team in every way” I said, “even with our ups and downs”.

“No friendship can be perfect but we certainly are close” Helena said.

My thoughts were broken as I heard Charlotte say, “Dinner smells so good, let's eat!”  As we stuffed the marvelous food into our hungry mouths, we could not stop talking about the incident with the walkie talkies. We talked about it until there was no more to talk about.  Then, we got a plan together. We looked for our walkies and listened to what they were saying for a while. Eventually getting bored we asked a question to the mystery person who little did we know was about to reveal himself. No need to worry, we were careful about what we asked and what we answered.

             As it started to get dark, we learned that the mystery was coming to an end and he proved his case he was not bad, he was just trying to scare us and pull a prank.   Boy-oh-boy did it work.  I thought of how marvelous my BFFs are and how thankful I am for them. We all are quite different but that is what makes our friendship fit together so well. We are just like a puzzle that has been mended together by our friendship. The world is a tough place but with them anything is achievable.  The heat of the fireside was warming my hands and feet, I take a good look at my friends, they were all sitting beside me, as happy as can be.

                       Strange behavior in Salem  

In salem people are being accused,people are being hanged is this true or is it just a big lie?

It was an ordinary day in salem when two girls named Betty and Abigail started to act weird. In the late 1600’s, there were a lot of puritans in the Massachusetts Bay colony. The puritans had  a very strong belief in God, so when something went wrong they all suspected the devil. Betty and Abigail were the first girls who  started to have fits. When their parents tried to call a doctor-  the doctor  said that,” the devil himself was controlling the two girls”.

Later two more girls named Ann Putnam, and Elizabeth Hubbard ,they also started to have strange fits. They claimed that three women named Sarah Good,Sarah Osborne, and Tituba and their spirits were pinching and pricking them. But no one could see the spirits except them, but everyone still believed them. By the end of February two more girls started to have strange fits ,and news spread quickly.

People started to have full faith in the girls when they said more and more people have been hurting them, and even though they seemed pretty close to all the families they took no chances and they believed the girl’s even though they had the most surreal answers.

                                    

       Innocent people are being accused

On March 1st, the three women named by the girls were questioned one by one. The whole town came to the hearings. The girls broke down into more fits when they saw Tituba, fearing for her life, Tituba lied to the judges and told them that Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne told her to kill Ann Putnam. When she thought that she was safe and that  Sarah Osborne would go to jail, she was wrong. Tituba’s corporation  did not free her, and that only gave the judge more of a reason to believe the girls.The judges sent all three women to wait for there turn to get hanged.

When the judge sent the three accused witches to jail the girls fits got worse. Villagers were shocked when they heard that the girls have accused a respected member of the church and her name was Martha Corey. She had claimed that she was a gospel women and she had never had anything to do with witchcraft since she was a child. But

the judges didn't take her honesty into account,  so they counted her as guilty and she was sent to jail with all the other accused witches.

When the girls started to accuse more and more people,  the other townspeople started to get suspicious and they started to question there judgement. Soon they started to accuse the governor's wife and since she is of higher standards,  the towns people started to think the girls were lying. So they did not even bother to run a trial. Now they want to confront the girls, but  when they did, the girls insisted that they were right about the ACCUSED witches. Now fewer people started to believe there lies.

                                              Guilty or innocent

 Even though all the accused witches were sent to jail, the girls “ fits” got worse and             

soon no one believe the girls. Then the girls started to find, really any woman or man that was not nice to them. Since they thought they got on the good side of the judges,      they thought that  they could accuse almost anyone and  they started spreading rumors about a gospel church women-  saying that she was planning on killing the other children.

Ann Putnam started the rumor. The next day she told the judges  and she was sent to court to have a trial.  She believed that if she told the truth, she would be set free. But she was dead wrong. Because by now the judges were just following the judgment and of the girls and since they said she was “guilty” they sent her to jail with the others to be hanged the next day.

When word got out to the governor, he himself went to the court and jail to free the accused witches. Also,  made a claim that any accused witches would be thoroughly checked and listened to and if the court finds them guilty,  then they will be sent to jail. Soon after that, Ann Putnam and the other girls confessed to everyone and fourteen years later,  that they were lying and they apologized.

Conclusion

                                                

                            In conclusion more and more people were being accused and this went on for a long period of time. However,  the girls did apologize a couple years later, but could not apologize for all of the death and the suffering.

  In my opinion, the Salem witch trial was a very tragic event. I also think that it taught a lesson. Like not to lie or that could cause you in more trouble. Because, Like Ann Putnam, she blamed lot of people. So the other townspeople believed her. When she said something so simple, for e.g- “Oh! that lady, she scolded me”. Then all the people believed that innocent lady was a witch. Because those people have been fed too many lies. And, I think that those misfortunes could have ruined the town of Salem .

Did you know that the salem witch trials started in colonial Massachusetts between the times 1692 and 1693 ? More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, which was known as the devils magic. Twenty people were executed. Eventually, the colony admitted that the trials were a mistake. The story continues to attract the curious minds of people more than 300 years later.

Several hundred years ago, many christians and people of other faiths believed in the devil. They thought that the devil could give certain people-  known as witches,  the power to harm others. A witchcraft craze rippled through Europe from the 1300’s to the end of the 1600’s.

Laurie Winn Carlson, a historian believed that a disease called encephalitis caused the girls’ fits. The disease spread by mosquitoes, can cause fever, confusion and seizures.
