Family Pie
“Last one there is a rotten egg!” Kamy shouted. It was a beautiful
summers day. The sky was a light cornflower blue, our pond was gleaming with
the reflection of the sun, and the birds were twittering with delight. I rushed
past Kamy not wanting to become the rotten egg. “She’s fast but not fast
enough,” I thought smiling as a cool, crisp breeze swept over my face. Kamy has
short ebony black hair, that was put into two french braids. She had on navy
blue jeggings, and a rose pink Minnie Mouse T-Shirt. “You’re the rotten egg!” I
declared when I reached the raspberry bush.
The raspberry bush’s leaves were the color of
peas. It was covered with razor-edge thorns and very little crimson red
raspberries. As Kamy was denying her loss saying that Daddy was the rotten egg,
Daddy had finally reached the bush. “I don’t think there are any berries left,”
he said, his loud booming voice startling me. Daddy has a short beard the color
of coal. He was wearing a small delft blue hat with tiny holes, smoke gray
sweatpants, thin coffee brown glasses, a short sleeve red T-shirt, and he was
carrying a medium sized bowl the color of lemons. “No,” Kamy protested,”There
are some right there.” she remarked, bending down to pick the berries.
“Careful!”I shouted as Kamy started to rise with the raspberries, not wanting
her to scratch the back of her neck against the thorns.
“I know Makeda,” she whined. Then we started
picking as many berries as we could.
The following week,
we had all the ingredients to bake raspberry pie. “Yes, we finally have all the
ingredients!” I exclaimed with anticipation. As Mommy started to unpack the
ingredients,I unbuckled Nabu, who playing with his toy octopus Ollie. Nabu has eyes
that are like melted chocolate. He has a
huge gap between his teeth, and he was wearing khakis, and a cobalt blue
T-shirt with pictures of palm trees. Nabu laughed as I tickled him all over his
belly. Then I put him in his walker and off he went laughing.
Abruptly a scent
drifted into the living room. “Yum!” I thought, grinning, imagining what the
pie would taste like, walking into the kitchen.
When I walked into the
kitchen Mommy was making the raspberry sauce for the pie. Mommy had her hair
tied up in a flower printed scarf, she had on pants as dark as a raven, and her
tangerine orange shirt that says: Poof….. she's gone. She has chestnut brown
skin and almond shaped eyes. “I can’t wait!” I thought, walking over to the
creme colored counter. The scent was really strong now. I inhaled trying to
savor the sent. My mouth was watering. “I hope this pie will taste good,” I
thought worried.
“Beep,” the oven
chirped,” beep beep beep.” “It is finally ready!” I thought jumping up and down
as Daddy pulled the pie out of the old black oven implanted into the wall. “Can
we eat it, can we eat it?” Kamy asked impatiently jumping up and down as well.
“Not yet,”responded Daddy,”you have to wait for
it to cool and until we have dinner.”
“Aw, I wanted to eat the raspberry pie now,”
Kamy said in a whimper.
“Don’t worry, I
will play with you while we wait for the pie to cool,” I offered.
“Ok,” Kamy replied, “I will go get my dolls.”
And she set off running.
“Dinner was yummy honey,” Daddy said smiling.
“Thank
you,” Mommy responded. For dinner we had chicken, mashed potatoes, and
broccoli.
“Yup!” piped up Kamy, “dinner was delicious.”
“Can we have pie now?” I asked.
“Sure!”Mommy replied heading towards the oven.
The pie was set on
the table. I could smell happiness coming out of the pie. It took Mommy a
million years till she cut that pie. The pie slowly landed on my plate. I
lifted the fork to my mouth. I took a bite. Suddenly,a sweet salvation washed over me.
My mind flashed back to all the fun memories from the past week. Picking
berries with Kamy and Daddy. Tickling Nabu. And watching Mommy bake the pie. “I
love this pie,” I thought,“and I love my family too.” And with a smile,I took
another bite of the jam filled, graham cracker crusted pie. I looked around the
table. Everybody was
seated. Daddy, Mommy, Kamy; even Nabu was in the kitchen! “I’m glad they are my
family,” I thought and continued to enjoy my family pie.
The following day,
after having more pie, Kamy had wanted to play outside. “Last one there is a
rotten egg!” Kamy shouted. It was a beautiful summer’s day. The sky was a light
cornflower blue, our pond was gleaming with the reflection of the sun, and the
birds were twittering with delight. “She’s fast but not fast enough,” I thought
smiling as a cool, crisp breeze swept over my face. We reached the raspberry
bush, agreeing on a tie. “Let’s play Hide and Seek,” Kamy suggested. “Okay,” I
answered. Kamy ran off giggling. I walked over to the raspberry bush thinking I
would go find Kamy later. “I’ll just go see if there are anymore berries,” I
thought. When I reached the bush, I bent down searching. “I guess we picked all
the berries we could reach,” I thought spotting crimson red berries on the
other side of the bush. Turning away I thought, “You know what, I don’t need
any more berries because…….. my belly is filled with pie, and my heart is
filled with love.” Then I ran off to find Kamy,
smiling.
