 HOME LIFE IN THE COLONIAL TIMES

Introduction:

Chapter 1: GIRLS’ JOBS AT HOME

Some of the girls’ jobs were to prepare dinner. Another job is to clean the house. The last thing they have to do is make clothes. They also have to dye the clothing. If you are wondering how they dyed clothing back then, well, first the girls collect berries and other materials that contain color. Then, you mush it all up and put the clothing into the homemade dye. In the chart below, there are some more materials that you could use to dye clothing back then.
Cochineal=Red
Fustic=Yellow
Alkanet=Brown
Logwood=Blue
Annatto Seeds=Yellow
Brazilwood=Red
Indigo=Blue
Sassafras=Tan
Madder=Orange
Turmeric=Yellow
Walnut=Brown
Oak Bark=Brown

According to www.decktowel.com flax is made into linen by “First linen is made from the cellulose that grow inside the stalks of the flax plant, or Linum Usitatissimum one of the oldest cultivated plant in human history. Flax is an annual plant, which means it only lives for one growing season.”

Chapter 2: BOYS’ JOBS AT HOME

Boys in the colonial times did not have as many chores as girls. Although the boys’ chores were a bit more difficult. As you know, the girls’ chores were to make clothes, prepare dinner, and to clean the house. However some of the boys’ chores were to tame the livestock, herd the cattle, and chop the fire wood.
          All of these chores had to be done in order to keep the livestock calm, keep the cattle together, and keep the whole family warm on cold nights. Unlike girls, boys had to
 go to grammar school for their education in writing and arithmetic. People in the colonial times thought that laziness was a sin and taught their children that work was good for them even though boys went to  school they worked in the morning before school, in the afternoon after school and even
at night.

Chapter 3: WHAT SCHOOL WAS LIKE IN THE COLONIAL TIMES

The school rules in the colonial times were different then they are today. Back then, if you talked in class, the teacher would whip your hands with a ruler. Another thing that is different from now is that instead of paper that you can just grab out of the printer the teacher will tell you to go outside and get a piece of bark from a tree.

Also there was only one room for all of the grades so you might end up with a third grader even if you were in high school.

CONCLUSION

Have you ever thought what would happen if you were alive in the colonial times? Well if you get in trouble a lot in school, you would learn to behave pretty quickly. And if you don't like your teacher now, you should be very grateful that you don't get whipped all the time. So since I am done with my report I am going to leave you thinking, if you lived in the colonial times do you think you would do well in school? Do you think you would do well in life in general?
