George
Washington

Introduction

Did you know that George Washington was only 11 when his
father died? After his father died he toughened up. At the age of 14
George was as strong as any man. These are some interesting facts
about George Washington. George Washington faced many
hardships in his life, but he is still a very famous person and
president. In this book you will learn about George growing up,
George fighting in the Revolutionary war, and  George’s life after
the Revolution.

Chapter 1 : Growing up

George was born on February 22,1732. At the age of 3 he moved to
Hunting Creek.
Shortly after George's father died, (George was 11), his brother
(Lawrence) got married. After Lawrence got married he lived on
Mount Vernon. Life was pretty good on Mount  Vernon, there were
many parties and balls there.
For the balls and parties George wore fine new silk clothing.
At the age of 14 George wanted to go to the sea and join the Navy,
but his mother would not let him. Once George’s mom would not
let him go to sea he found other things to do, George became an
surveyor! A surveyor measures land.
Also when George was 20 Lawrence became ill, George took him to
Barbados and hoped that he would get better there, but he did not.
Lawrence returned to Mount Vernon to die.
Soon after Lawrence’s death, George Washington joined the
Virginia army as a soldier. Also, when George joined the army
there was trouble with the English and the French
(French and Indian war). They were fighting over the
Wilderness” (The Wilderness was an place filled with fine coated
animals and Indians.) Indians sold fur from animals to the French
and English. Both the French and the English thought they owned
the Wilderness which caused them to fight. This fight is now known
as the French and Indian war. Once George found 50 soldiers in the
woods! When he saw them, they battled.(This was the first battle
George had ever seen!) After that there was more fighting and this
fighting turned into a war.

Chapter 2: Revolution

The Continental army was formed by George Washington in the
Revolution. This was the same war when America won
their independence from England.  George Washington was appointed
commander of the continental army on June 14 1775.
He played a leading military and political role in this war.
George Washington crossed the icy, freezing Delaware River not
once but twice in the cold month of December.
After a few months of fighting in the war, supplies started to
disappear and these issues  became one of George’s greatest
problems.
Mount Vernon barely escaped destruction in this war. (Mount
Vernon is where George's plantation house is.) .  A British ship
anchored  by the plantation. Some of Washington’s slaves escaped
to the ship.  The British then demanded supplies in addition to
keeping the slaves instead of burning down Mt. Vernon.
There were also several battles in the Revolution that George
attended to (Siege of Boston, Battle of Long Island, Battle of Kip’s
Bay, Battle of Harlem Heights, Battle of White Plains, Battle of
Fort Washington, Evacuation of Fort Lee, Battle of Trenton, Battle
of second Trenton, Battle of Princeton, Battle of Brandywine,
Battle of the Clouds, Battle of Germantown, Battle of White
Marsh, Battle of Monmouth, and Siege of Yorktown.). George
Washington actually lost most of these battles.

Chapter 3: Life after Revolution

The Revolution was an sad and harsh time, but somehow
George Washington survived it! George Washington after the war
then became the first president.
George went up against John Adams. He went and did his first
two terms but when it was time for the third election he did not
want to run. Then people decided that you can only run for two
terms. George Washington was president for 8 years. (1787-1797)
After his presidency, he spent the rest of his life on Mount Vernon.
The plantation was very large and he spent his time caring for it.
He died 2 ½ years after he left office.

Conclusion:

George Washington was clearly a big help in the colonial time period.
George Washington faced many hardships when he was growing up
such as his father’s and brother’s death. He was a great
commander/chief and very dedicated to the Army and his country.
