Most of my Research came from Who Was Paul Revere?
Paul Revere
Have you ever wondered who was Paul Revere and why he was so important?
Well I have and personally I think he’s very interesting. I learned about him
growing up and what he did as a colonial soldier and even when he had his own
family. So if you really what to know about Paul Revere And his night ride this
is the book to find out about it.
Growing up
On the last week of 1734, Paul Revere was born in
Boston. His father, Apillios Revere came from France to Boston at the age of 13,
in America he changed his name to Paul Revere. His mother's name was
Deborah Hichborn, she grew up in
Boston on a wharf.
When Paul was young, he used to like swimming, riding, and playing with his
friends, Boston was perfect for him, he was a kid that liked to see everything and
do everything. Boston had Ships coming and going their were Wharfs, shops, and
warehouses, their were also lots of, pigs, dogs and people walking around. When
he was 13 he left school to work for his dad's silversmithing business at 15 he
decided he had too much energy for silversmithing. He also liked to have money
in his pocket, so at age 15 he came up with a smart business idea, he decided to be
a church bell ringer. As a church bell ringer he got 3 shillings a week. As a bell
ringer Paul made a contract so everyone could work evenly for their money, Paul
believed in fairness, he didn’t care who was the boss. When Revere was 19 ,
tragedy happened ,his dad died leaving him to take care of himself and his family.
Paul Revere Colonial Soldier
Paul was an American colonist, but a British citizen so he fought for the British
Redcoats. He wore a uniform with dark blue coat. He was sent to camp on the shore
of lake George in New York, the French troops were sent to camp nearby.
Through the summer Revere stayed in the fort all summer, they were waiting
for their enemy to attack. Paul did not take place in battles but was still
important.
Making history
It was the that year April 18th 1775 that made history, that night at
10 o’clock he and William
Dawes rode from Boston Massachusetts to Lexington Massachusetts to warn John
Hancock and Samuel Adams of the plans of the British Army.
The well-known poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow' in 1861 is an inaccurate poem, it was about Paul
Revere's ride and many of the facts are wrong. For one thing, Revere was not
alone on his mission to warn John Hancock, Samuel Adams and other patriots that the British
were approaching Lexington on the evening of April 18, 1775. The two other men
who joined him on his ride were William and Samuel Prescott.
Family life as an adult
After the Revolution Paul ran a small store as a silversmith and imported goods
and other things from England. By 1788 he opened a foundry, it was a metal
factory that made, bolts, spike, and nails for the North end shipyards it also
included brass fittings for the U.S.S Constitution, and also made cannons and
casts bells. He opened the first copper rolling mill in North America in 1801 and
made copper sheeting for the hull of the U.S.S.
Paul wanted a family, it didn’t take him long to find a good wife on
August of 1757 he married a lady named Sarah Orne. He
called her Sary ,they lived in the same house that Paul grew up in. His mom still
lived in the house with them but paid rent to him. The first baby was born in 1758,
every two years Sary had another baby, Paul called them his “little lambs”. Sary
got sick and died after giving birth to the last daughter.
Revere married his second wife Rachel Walker many months after Sarah's death,
she was born in 1745, she was very smart just like Paul, Paul made a poem for her
“ the fair one closest to my heart”. They had eight children, five sons and three
daughters. Rachel and Paul named three of their sons John. The first two died
young and the third lived to adulthood he attended Harvard and was very smart,
he also became a physician.
During the Revolution , Rachel held down the homestead and sent provisions
to Paul while he was away serving the American Revolution . On many
occasions, she had to bribe British officials to ensure the Revere family's
safety. She left Boston while it was still under control by the British, having
to leave her 15-year-old stepson Paul Jr. behind to manage the family's
silversmithing business.
Rachel died in 1813, it was two years into their retirement and before Paul death.
He died on May 10, 1818 in his home at Charter Street in Massachusetts . He was
83 years old when he died . His body lies at the Granary Burial Ground Boston
Massachusetts. Pauls children were, Joseph Warren ,Harriet, Maria , Sarah,
Joshua, Isanna, Frances, Lucy, John, Mary, Paul Jr., Deborah, and Elizabeth
