HOT STUFF!!
It was a cold and dark Friday night when Tess, my mom
and I, all got to Camp Jewell for a camping trip with my Girl Scout troop.
Of
Course Tess was in girl scouts too (or else why would we be bringing her with
us.?) :-)
A few minutes later we parked. I was so thrilled that
Tess
was with me, because I ended up needing her that day, and the whole rest of the
weekend. And also because she is my best friend, and I always love to hang out
with her.
Moments later, Tess and I ran like cheetahs to the
cabin. It was in a clearing of the
woods, surrounded by tall trees with coffee colored trunks and emerald green
leaves.
“Wait girls you have to get your bags from the car,” my mom called out, as she
opened the trunk to the car.
“Coming,” we yelled back.
When we were getting our bags, I whispered to Tess,
“it sure is peaceful without Tristan and Isabel here.”
“Yeah, sure is.” Tess replied with a quiet laugh. We
all set up our beds in the cabin, and we got a room all to ourselves.
“I call this one.” Tess quickly yelled before anyone
else could call it, with all her stuff in her hand half way up the ladder.
But I was already up there with my mom setting up the
bed.
“Hey!!” Tess said disappointedly, but laughing at the
same time.
“Well I got up here first so your going to have to
move on out.” I giggled with a straight face, that I couldn’t hold up for long.
Tess nodded her head back and forth, and rolled her
eyes.
We left all our bags, and snatched our sweaters, to go
on a big hike through the woods to the cafeteria.
When we were walking to the cafeteria, I could hear
the chirping of the birds, and the croaking of the frogs, in the beautiful lake
that looked the color of midnight.
As we used our flashlights to try to find our way through
the dark, it took us like an hour to get to the cabin, because we kept
getting lost in the deep..
dark.. Woods!!!
“Ueee, ue, ue. We are finally here, thank goodness.” I
murmured.
“Relax Mikayla, you weren’t going to die.” My mom said
exhaustively.
“If we were out there longer yea.” I said
sarcastically.
“Ohh Mikayla.” Tess yawned.
When we were in the cafeteria we saw all the other
girls from our troop.
On the walls, there were people’s names signed on
there, who ran three laps around the camp for people who have cancer.
“Hey guys!” Tess and I exclaimed.
“Hi!” they all responded back.
When I looked around the cafeteria I saw light gray
tables with food stains all over them. There were some chocolate chip cookies
on the tables and over next to it, there was some fruit that didn’t look so
great. So, we all went to get some cookies, but there were flies and white
spots all over them, so we totally dumped those disgusting things.
Emily looked over at a table with a beautiful bright red
and yellow flower tablecloth. On the table, there was boiling hot water in a
big black and silver dispenser. There
was a red lever for pouring the water. On the top, there was a label that read
“Caution: Boiling Hot Water.” And on the bottom of the dispenser it said “Only
used for tea.”
Suddenly, I looked over at Emily and then her eyes widened
and her mouth dropped open.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” I said happily.
“TEA!” We both yelled at the same time.
“Let's make tea!” Emily shouted with excitement.
So we all headed over to make some tea.
When Emily got a cup full of boiling hot water, I took
one little sniff. I could feel the steam on my face, like it was going to melt.
“Hwaa, that’s pretty hot.” I said with my eyebrows
moving up and down, and constantly blinking.
“I know right.” Emily said just as....
“Owww!”
“That hurts!”
Lauren and I were screaming for our moms.
When Emily turned around her elbow knocked over her
whole cup of boiling hot water, all over me and my friend Lauren.
It felt like fire just fell on me!!
We were screaming and crying so loud, all of China
could hear us.
It was so so hot that I ran to a big bright orange jug
full of ice cold water. I pressed down so hard on the tab that let the water
out, and just let it run all down my leg and foot. Although my shoe was damp
and cold with the water, it was worth it.
Tess came running to me and carried me to the one of
the tables and sat me on the bench. I took off my socks and shoes and pulled up
my pant legs so that I could see if my leg was burned.
Tess
got a ton of paper towels and gently put them and tapped them on my foot, and
leg.
Just
then, I gazed off and remembered, on the trip here, my mom was telling us about
when she burned her arm, and how bad
it was. I was wondering how bad mine would be.
Right
then and there Tess put a cold wipe on my leg and I snapped out of it.
“You
okay?” Tess questioned.
“Yeah
just fine.” I answered in a low voice.
But
in my head I wasn’t okay. Not one bit.
Luckily
Lauren was fine.
But
then I thought, “why me? Why me?”
A
few minutes later we started heading back to the cabin, so I had to get my
shoes and socks on very carefully. Tess and Lauren let me lean on them when we
walked, because I had to limp.
When
we arrived at the cabin, I took my shoes off very carefully, and I saw three
big blisters/bubbles. I was so scared, my heart was pounding so hard, but my
mom said it will pop on its own.
“POP?!”
I screamed.
“Yes,
but you won’t feel a thing,” my mom said calmly.
But
it wasn’t a relief. Just as I climbed down the same ladder as Lauren, and at
the same time, she stepped on my bubbles, and POP!!!! I cried so hard that I
had to ask Tess to get my mom for me, because it hurt so bad. But Tess told me
to calm down, and I knew she was right that it would feel better if I would
just let her help me. But I still wanted my mom instead. My mom finally came
and put Band-Aids on the bubbles.
“You
said it wouldn’t hurt.” I said still sniffling a tad bit.
“It
only hurt because Lauren accidently stepped on it.”
While
my mom was putting the Band-Aids on me, all my
FRIENDS were giving me candy and distracting me so I
wouldn’t feel anything.
Just
then I realized that friends are always there for you.
